Have you seen this utility? I don't think it's supported by VMware but it may help.
Have you seen this utility? I don't think it's supported by VMware but it may help.
I've read about a thousand docs about QuickPrep.
I've read it has to be in my VM template for View.
I've added the VMware View agent to my VM template.
I see no indication of anything added with "quick" or "prep" anywhere after added the VMware View agent.
Sooooo.. where is it? And how do I get it?
Stuck for now..
-Jeremy
It's enabled from the View Administrator page when setting up a new linked clone pool. You will have the choice to utilize Quickprep or Sysprep.
View Composer handles the quick prep. There is nothing in the view agent the needs to be checked. A bit more information can be found in the below article
Okay. Thanks.
I haven't gotten that far, because I'm having trouble creating the pool.
Closing this out, and posting another message for help. Thanks Team.
Here's where I'm at:
1. I've got my VM inside of ESX.
2. When I try to make my first pool, and go here I get this: http://screencast.com/t/SCh2qqzRi
If I'm supposed to make this a template using ESX, so then it's listed, I cannot figure out how to do that.
For what it's worth.. here's a video which "shows" me how to do it (screenshot of the video): http://screencast.com/t/BId5CFEL0ZPo
And here's what I have in my real life: http://screencast.com/t/uc2Yblq9dUm
See? No way for me to make a template.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

So your connection from View to vCenter is solid and you have the agent installed inside the parent VM?
Yep. That's all fine so far.
The VM (which runs perfectly fine in ESXi and I use the console)... started out life as a VMware Workstation guest.
I used VMware Workstation and "uploaded" it right to the ESXi .. and.. bingo. It's in the inventory. Yay.
Now I cannot right-click on it and make it a template. There's just no option to do so.
You need to create a “gold” virtual machine and create a snapshot of it. Basically a virtual machine with OS, patches, basic software installed. Then create a snapshot of that virtual machine. Afterwards, you will have choices to choose from to create your pool.

It looks like your using the vSPhere client to connect directly to the host which would explain why you don't have the template option. In order to convert to a template you must be connected through a vCenter, however when using linked clones you wouldn't convert to a template. In linked clones you only need to shutdown the parent image, make a snapshot, and then select that snapshot through vCenter and View integration.
So, what you have said, I have done:
1. I have the gold image.
2. I made a snapshot.
Result: http://screencast.com/t/VTjvBhFvnAHT
What's still true is that there is nothing listed when creating a Floating pool: http://screencast.com/t/B2MiHQjIm7r
Also, I have no idea what is meant by "you must be connected through a vCenter".
I have vCenter installed and ready on my network. But not sure how to connect to my ESX inventory THROUGH vCenter.
If I go to vcenter.fabrikam.com:8443 I get this: http://screencast.com/t/f2fs9lT8
Not sure where to go from there to see the inventory.
(Sorry if obvious.. Please advise on that too.) Thanks.

You should be able to put the vCenter FQDN into the vSphere client and login that way. Also you want to make sure you filled out the configuration info in View Administrator, View Configuration, Servers, vCenter. This would allow you to integrate View, vCenter, and enable View Composer.
Okay. That helped. Here's exactly what I did:
1. Putting in the FQDN of the vCenter server (using the vSphere client) gave me the vCenter options and UI. Thanks for that.
2. I was then able to make templates and clone.
3. I then MADE a template.
4. I then made a VM *FROM* that template.
5. I then made a snapshot. (Has to be a snapshot made via the vCenter and NOT via vSphere.. arrgh.)
6. Snapshot magically appears: http://screencast.com/t/eBvPz7k5odZT
Thanks for the team effort !! Most appreicated.
PS I think I could have omitted step 3 and 4 and it might have still worked (HLSGet's suggestion).. but I was bent on seeing TEMPLATE and CLONE working. :-)
Also.. I found this technote which echos my problem exactly: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004000
Hi all,
I'm planning a move of our View Infrastructure from one datacentre to another, and am looking for some assistance.
At the moment we have a vCenter/ vComposer and 4x View Brokers in the old datacentre.
I have another project to move the vCenter/ vComposer to the new datacentre, but am looking at building 4 new brokers in the new datcentre, and then decommissioning the 4 old brokers.
Plan:
Build 4 new brokers in the new datacentre, build as replica brokers.
Make sure they can accept connections.
Now this is the bit i am stuck on....do i run the installer to decommission the old brokers one by one and then promote one of the new brokers to be the master?
Can these brokers still accept connections whilst the vCenter/ vComposer is in the old datacentre?
Also, in regards to DB backups, do i just backup the vCenter Server DB, View Composer DB, and the ADAM DB prior to promoting one of the new brokers to be the main broker?
Thanks in advance.
Hi!
I have simple installation at the current moment.
1 VI infrastructure 5.1 (1117900) with vCenter 5.1 (1064983) for View Virtual machine (connection, security, composer)
2nd VI infrastructure 5.1 (1117900) with vCenter 5.1 (1064983) (no relations between vCenter-s) where transfer server and virtual desktops resides.
View version is 5.2
I have 1 pool (auto, dedicated, linked clones) with 10 max desktops (with windows xp)
Local mode policy set to Allow
OS Image published on transfer server.
I can start checkout process, but receive an error.
Message from View Administrator -
Local Mode Operation StartPackageTransfer failed for Desktop test-10-wxp, ID: tmp1.
Error message: failed to start the package transfer:
com.vmware.vdi.desktoptracker.MVDIOperationControl$MVDIOperationException: No reason specified.
Message from View Client -
Do you have a suggestion about this error? What I can check first?
p.s. I have tested local mode for virtual machine with hw version 8 and all work fine. Does it means thw virtual machine HW version 9 still not supported?

Thanks for the update. Looks like I will need to upgrade as well.
To fix this, I wrote a script that looks at the default printer and exports it to a registry file in the user's profile only if it's set to network printer on a specific set of print servers at my organization. At login time the default printer is restored. All network printers are exported and restored at logon/logoff too so they don't disappear by accident as we see sometimes too for printers not deployed through group policy.
This was especially important as we moved to using persona management, as this caused this problem to happen way more often on a floating pool.
I may have found a solution. The VMWare rep assigned the case I filed said that ThinPrint can overwrite Personas. I tried just disabling the services, but that didn't work. I ended up completely uninstalling the 'Virtual Printing' section of the VMWare View Agent and it seems to have worked, although we are still doing some testing.
gunnarb,
Any updates with doing this same DirectX9 test with vSGA on the K2?
