that is very sad..... the official docs dont talk about AD only.... do you have any official doc to confirm that?

THanks

We have been shipping for over five years and I have been working on View for over 6 years and we have always required AD. There always has been some notation of AD requirements in the docs since its required to get things working.

In the getting started guide the first step is preparing your AD. It links to this section of the Install Guide in the docs.

VMware View 5.2 Documentation Library ( Preparing your Active Directory )

Here it states View uses Active Directory and certain steps must be done. It also states the AD versions supported.

PowerCLI - Incorrect StartTime when placed in a CSV?

$

The StartTime is dramatically different when it is placed into a CSV.  For example:

For one user, Get-RemoteSession shows a StartTime of "Sun Jun 23 08:28:12 MDT 2013".  But when I pipe it to Export-CSV, the value shows "Mon Nov 16 15:41:05 MST 45446"

Any idea why?

Re: View persona roaming not always working

Hi,

Did you check the persona log file? Is there anything like 'aborting sync / upload' message in the log file?

If you save a file on the desktop, is the file replicated to the persona repository? Did you re-check your NTFS-permissions on the share?

I had another case where a folder was not accessible and caused the profile sync to be incomplete, e.g. some folders were synced and some were not. I crawled through the persona log file and finally catched a folder which I later added to the excluded folder GPO. After that the sync was complete and I never had issues

Thanks for your info, I think we have to get a device that you are using to check this issue.

Issue after System Upgradation

Not exactly sure what went wrong but I recently upgraded my VM environment from ESXi 5.0 - 5.1.1 along with vcenter.  Now I'm getting an error in View "Cannot connect to vcenter server. It's the same username and password as it's always been.  Is this related to the SSO install since the 5.1 upgrade??  When I look at my pools I cannot edit any of them at all.  I cannot create a new one at all.  If I try to add a new server it just shows the same.  I tried to install it again and it let me but now all the older pools are related to the old vcenter server.  How can I get those old pools to a point where I can edit them???  I don't have to delete them do I?  any help is appreciated.

Pls help me.

Does View Agent Keep Track of Security ID of Guest OS?

Dear all, I am a little inexperienced in vSphere and Horizon View.

I want to set up a Terminal Service Pool which contains several virtual machines running Windows Server 2008 R2,

and use Horizon View for account management. That is, only the connection server and active directory are used.

Toward the end, I created a virtual machine as my golden machine, and installed Windows Server 2008 R2, VM Tools, and View Agent.

Without View Agent, the virtual machine is not recognized by View Administrator.

Then I cloned virtual machines in vCenter and customized them for a different SID, and booted them to add to my domain.

However, when I tried to add them in a TS Pool in View, View only recognizes only one of the virtual machines.

Is this because View Agent wrongly records the SID in the golden machine and reports to View Administrator,

so all the virtual machines are regarded as the same one?

Any replication would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Could be a few things:

DNS - Does it work properly? (This is the most common cause of failure, please verify even if you think it works)

Firewall - Can the desktops and connection broker talk to each other on the correct ports?

Windows Activation - How do you activate your desktops? (MAK or KMS) Are you sure its working correctly?

Terminal Server instances are not managed by View through vCenter as individual desktop VMs are. The correct way to set up these pools is to clone your instances and then install the View Agent on each one after customization. The installer will prompt for connection server credentials and explicitly register with it, you can add them into a terminal server pool.

Smartcard problem

Hi

I have a problem at a customer site with smartcard authorization. They use smarcard to logon to 2 different websites. I can logon to 1 site using the smartcard, but when I try to logon to the second site the browser hangs and the only solution is to rebbot the virtual desktop. When I hav logged on again, then I can logon to secondary site, but then when I try to logon to first site, my browser hangs again.

I can get this working when I use an old smartcard that all of the customers users used to have.

The difference between the cards are:

Both are Gemalto Javacards with EID 2048 applet

Working card:

IP8 card with RSA 1024

Non-working card:

IP9 card with RSA 2048

Both cards works on a physical PC.

Have anyone had this problem or any suggestions what it can be?

Best regards

Ingemar

explorer.exe will not start

Hi all,

My problem seems to be a strange one.

I have a user that uses windows xp on their physical machine (with a roaming profile) and can log in fine. However, when they log in to their virtual desktop (also Windows XP) it hangs on a grey screen. Opening task manager and starting explorer.exe kicks everything in to life.

I have tried unassigning and reassiging the user to another desktop in the pool and it still does the same. I've even recomposed the pool since and same again.

I have 50 users successfully using the pool.

My initial thoughts were edit the registry, but the reg key that relates to the shell where explorer is is HKLM, which is local only to the machine, and since I have done a recompose it should of got rid of any anomoloies anyway. I'm not aware of HKLM being pulled through to a roaming profile, and yet the user can still log in to their normal physical desktop fine anyway.

Don't suppose any of you have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi Ingemar.

What View version are you running? (Client, Connectionbroker and agent)

What endpoint are you coming from? (Windows, ThinClient?)

Anything interesting in the logs?

Hi

I have tried every version since 4.6, same problem. The endpoints are Windows 7 PC's. Can't find anything at all of intrest in the log files.

Did you actually tried all combinations of 4.6, 4.6.1, 5.0, 5.1, 5.2 or did you mean just the client or agent?

Wow, that is a lot of work...

There have been smartcard-improvements in the last few releases and a few issues have been solved but this I have not heard about before.

I would suggest to file a support ticket with VMware support and get them to look at this.

Hi,

what is your version of VMware View? From your post I assume you upgraded only vSphere components, right?

If you did not upgrade View, did you check the compatibility matrix if vSphere 5.1.1 is supported with your current View version?

Re: User profile folders created on connection server?

I had this same issue with my connection servers. I had about 30 users on one of them, and less than 10 on another. I couldn't find any reason for it either, so I ended up opening a low priority case with VMware Support. They found the answer:

---
Found the answer for you: It appears that users who require a password change and change it as they login to their View Desktop create a user profile on the Connection Server
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/eb56b301-feaa-4753-a70a-cd950bafa303/windows-2008-invokechangepassword-lots-of-profiles-in-cusers
---

Thinking about this some more, this probably only affects organizations that run the View Client as an explorer shell replacement (we do this), effectively replacing the normal windows authentication. So basically, when a user's password is going to expire, the only interface they have to change it in is via the View Client. Apparently that change mechanism ends up creating an empty profile on the windows server itself?

From the article, it would be interesting to test changing the Allow log on locally option to see if it prevents the profile creation, or if it breaks password changes!
