Re: Paravirtual SCSI controller oddities

Did you ever get an answer on this. I am doing that as well as it was recommended to us to stop some LSI_SAS errors.

I now have two SCSI Paravirtual when the master has only one.

This second contoller is by design. Horizon attaches its own disks (e.g. internal (~20mb), disposable, persistent) to a new controller that is created during compose operation.

The second controller should match the type of the first, this is what was the original issue.

I think this could be related to recompose and not deleting the old vms that had an other controller type earlier. Not all virtual hardware components are renewed during recompose actions.

No way to install HTML Access separately so far.

To install HTML Access, you need uninstall Horizon Server without removing database, then reinstall with HTML Access option checked.

Re: Does anyone experiencing Windows 10 hung on reboot with linked clone VMs?

Hello everyone,

***Note***

This is posted in another thread in the vmware communities as well, but thought I'd post to this one as well.

I have an update to share on this - it may be fairly "wordy" (I know that's not a word), but here goes....

Issue

Linked-clone Windows 10 VM's take a considerable amount of time (5-30 minutes, depending) to complete a guest OS restart cycle.

Troubleshooting

To make a long story short, I eventually noticed that disk IO was ZERO during a Windows 10 VM restart - it zero's out until the VM gets to the Windows 10 logo with the spinning circles, then the disk IO suddenly spikes once it gets to the login screen. From this, I began to look at disk configuration settings directly on the VM (vSphere -> right-click VM -> edit). I noticed the disk was using LSI SAS. I reviewed event logs, and noticed (on several Win10 VM's I tested with) there was a 10+ minute span of time with LSI_SAS event warnings. From there, I created a brand new Windows 10 master/gold VM using Paravirtual SCSI instead of LSI SAS. I then sanitized the mast VM and created a new pool - the Win10 linked-clone VM's are now down to 5 minute restarts. Much better, but still not great by any means.

We then noticed that the .vmdk on the VM (all the linked-clone VM's, in fact) was using a "vmname.checkpoint.vmdk" - this "checkpoint" in the .vmdk indicates it's using a snapshot from the master VM. After many hours of testing, we found a sort of fix/workaround....

Fix

If you:

1. Shut down the VM and migrate the storage (storage only)

2. Select configure per disk

3. Change the storage datastore for each disk on the VM, click Next, let it complete (may take anywhere from a few minutes to several, depending on disk size)

4. You should then have an alert on the VM indicating a consolidation is needed

5. Right-click the VM -> Snapshots -> Consolidate

6. Once the consolidation is finished, right click the VM - notice that you can now change the disk size (if needed)

7. Power up the VM, log in, and restart

The restart time is now down to under 30 seconds (I've seen it as low as 7-8 seconds). I tested this using thick and thin disk provisioning, and either one didn't seem to make a difference. With 100% certainity (at least in my case) it has to do with the VM running off a "checkpoint.vmdk" disk - once the VM's disk is pointed back to its own self-named .vmdk, the restart issue is resolved.

Now to provide some additional context to this:

In vSphere, I create a new VM, set configuration options, point to an .iso, power up VM and proceed through our imaging process. Once this is complete, I log into the VM using a domain admin account, configure the OS, sanitize (prep it for cloning), and take a single snapshot.

I then create (or edit) a View pool (for Win10 testing they have all been persisten/dedicated pool's) which provisioning VM's off the snap from that new gold VM. Something interesting during this composing process I noticed earlier today - when the linked-clone (we unfortunately do not have licensing for instant clones) is being provisioned, I noticed the disk being used is its own named "vmname.vmdk" - great! However, once provisioning is complete, the disk changes to "vmname.checkpoint.vmdk"

Anyone have any insight into why that occurs? Why wouldn't the cloned VM just continue to use it own named .vmdk? Any helpful answer on that would be much appreciated!

At any rate, we're able to fix/work around the Win10 restart slowness by, again, migrating the VM's storage only, to a new datastore, consolidate under snapshots, power up VM, and BAM - fixed.

I hope all of this makes sense - if anyone is still experiencing Win10 restart slowness and is able to try this storage migration/consolidate process, please give it a try and let me know the result. So far it's been consisten for me, but I'd like to hear about what others experience is.

This almost feels like a possible bug in vCenter or View somewhere, but I can't say for sure - anyone with VMWare have any thoughts to share?

Also, fwiw, we're running a Pure storage array (not vSAN) with plenty of space available and excellent dedupe. Also, we're using EFI (though I've tried EFI and BIOS, neither seems to make a difference, as far as restart times are concerned).

Re: View Connection Server in separate cluster than Clients

What about separate vCenter's, and the concern about multiple host groups having access to the same LUN?  It seems that the composer server (vcenter for vdi), needs access to the LUN with the replica disks on them, as well as the LUNs with the link clones on them, but perhaps the view connect servers don't access the LUNs directly, but mainly are responsible to sending network connection and network commands to the composer when needed, to refresh, recompose, etc ?

Thank you

Bruce

Linked Cline vs instant clone (maintenance mode or vmotion support?)

With linked clones we can put a VM into maintenance mode to preserve that VM from being recomposed after logoff and we can vmotion linked clones between esx hosts. It appears we can't to this with instant clones? Is it a planned feature?

We have used these two techniques for esx maintenance and to preserve evidence on linked clones that have indications of compromise.

If these aren't planned features how should one go about accomplishing those two tasks?

Re: Linked Cline vs instant clone (maintenance mode or vmotion support?)

Does Persona management support RDS apps or desktops.

Hi,

I am to setting up RDS apps and each time when I try to save a file, I can see my profile folders (Download, document, pictures) that is on the RDS server, instead of my own Personal profile folders.

How can can RDS points automatically to my roaming profile folders?

Horizon view download Error

They are not accessed directly.

We have two vCenter environments, one dedicated to servers and the other to VDI. The PSC/VCSA, Connection Servers and Composer live in the server vCenter with no shared datastores (You should never share datastores across vCenters).

You need to contact support and open a case. This could be an issue with your account that they can resolve. If not they can walk you through locating the download.

Another user is reporting the same issue so this may be a website issue that they need to resolve.

Disabling Cipher Suites Diffie-Hellman

Hi All,

I've received a bad bad grade over on SSL Labs for my view security server (5.3.1), most notable is "This server supports insecure Diffie-Hellman (DH) key exchange parameters (LogJam)"

I've searched high and low for a way to change this, and keep getting stuck on instructions describing things that don't exist on my server (i.e. Jre/security.properties) and this being an inherited system, it's hard to tell if the instructions are wrong or my server is more broken than I thought.

Any help or places to look would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Search Broken After Recompose

$

Been fighting this for a while now.  Most if not all of the users have the Windows Search broken after a Recompose.  Posts that i've read all seem to talk about broken search with APPVOL.  Currently we don't use APPVOL and I'm back to Linked Clones and still have the issue.  It seems to be something to do with a profile but can't seem to nail down what it is.  We are just running licked clones with a persistent disk. I deleted my persistent disk to test and removed it from the master and still have the issue.  If I log into the console and try with my user I cannot get search to work however, if I login with another username the search works.

To add to the T-shooting that makes this stranger is teh fact that I made two pools from the same master with two separate snapshots.  One pool the search feature works the other does not.   ARGGH!

Anyone have an idea??  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks

thanks Ben,

Though I am confused how you avoid access from each vCenter that way.  In my thinking, the dedicated server vCenter/cluster would need access for the horizon composer especially to make replica disks, and link clones, and then the VDI vcenter would need read access at least to the linked clone LUN at least to allow management of the linked clones themselves, DRS to balance the VM resources across the hosts in the VDI cluster/vcenter.

Anyway, I appreciate you reply again.

Thanks

Bruce

It's all API calls to vCenter and Composer over the network layer.

Horizon View 5.x went end of general support on 2016/09/14, end of technical guidance on 2018/09/14 and end of availability on 2013/09/30 for View Enterprise. Instead of trying to modify this environment that you inherited where you could end up in a situation with no support I would urgently advise upgrading or migrating to 7.x (Horizon View 6.x goes end of general support in less than 6 months (2019/06/19)).
