RAMDISKs have been around since the days of DOS.  You can create a RAMDISK with Linux and present it to vSphere as a space to store VMs.  Without the benefits of Atlantis' deduplication, though, it won't scale.  Certainly , with linked clones, you could get by for awhile.    Ubuntu Ramdisk: An Easy Way - Ubuntuka
