There is no clear upgrade path from VMWARE VIEW from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 without a lot of manual effort
Correct, upgrading from one OS to another is not a supported action with Linked Clones, the 2 OS versions is very different.
If you have seen this statement somewhere, please post a link to it so we can fix that.
