Re: Horizon View 6 - Black screen connecting to desktops

thanks, i've tried to telnet to a virtual desktop port 4172 from my security server and it work (i don't get connection refused)

I think that the strange is that my front end firewall does not receive requests on 4172 (tcp or udp)..

Is this a new install or an upgrade from 5.X that was previously working?

You've stated it does this for both internal and external traffic, that's a clue. Start by focusing on internal traffic, usually fewer firewall rules and easier to troubleshoot. Can you paste a screen of the secure gateway configuration in the View Admin manager for both connection servers? Improper configuration of the PCoIP secure gateway can also have this impact. Here's a sanitized version of mine.

Servers > Connection Servers > (Select One) > Edit

SecureGatewayConfig.png

Servers > Security Servers > (Select One) > Edit

SecureGatewayConfig2.png

Unless tunneling is a requirement for internal connectivity, I usually untick these boxes for the connection servers servicing internal connections which results in a direct connect configuration, rather than tunnel.

The connection servers that are paired with external security servers, the configuration should appear as above.

This brings me to another question: how is the environment designed? Multiple connection servers and security servers or just one of each?

Also, what load balancing if any are you using?

Also, are you using PCoIP over (4172) or Blast (8443)? They are not the same. The OP is confusing as to which you're actually using.

Re: Possible to configure local profile with Persona Folder Redirection

Hey Sam,

I'm guessing you want to synchronize user data to a share like persona management does by default, not redirect it like windows does by default, is that correct? If that's what you're trying to do, you can install the persona management binaries on the desktops, then configure the appropriate group policies to control the profile synchronization. Here's what the binaries look like, downloadable from the my.vmware site.

If your goal is to protect end user data on physical machines for real, you should check out Horizon Mirage, which comes with Horizon Advanced. Automatically uploads all files on the desktop with 100% deduplication, and can quickly restore user files via a web portal if a desktop crashes. It is definitely the best DR for desktops play in the portfolio today. Hope this helps!

Does it work with RDP? Found this in the HP ThinPro 5.0 Administrator Guide.

So I'm pretty sure this means either use RDP, or use location based printing in VMware View with all drivers loaded into the guest OS.

Just a thought, you didn't mention the View version. Are you operating in a supported configuration? Check the interop matrix to make sure your vCenter and View versions are supported.

My thought would be perhaps the newest driver in the 5.5 isn't working correctly after the upgrade. To make a 100% determination if that's the problem, put a server in maintenance mode, wipe it out and install the old version of ESXi you used before 5.5. If the speed issue doesn't exist, upgrade it to 5.5 and see if it returns. At least at that point you'll know it's a software/driver problem only.

hi,

thanks for the input, forgot to mention this is for virtual desktops, not physical desktops, so need to use Mirage without the backup feature it provides as it is not supported in a virtual environment, the reason I ask is that I found out persona is not supported along side mirage, but if I can get the folders to redirect that will be good enough, don't like how windows does folder redirection, but if persona is turn off its folder redirection won't take effect.

thanks

Well i was trying to make a nice long post about how helpful the APEX 2800 card was to get this working, but seems i can't.  Long story short is that 1080p60 uses up about 20% of an APEX 2800's performance.

Just to follow up for anyone else reading this thread with the caveat that I've only retested vSGA so far after getting an APEX card:

We purchased a used APEX 2800LP off ebay for testing.  After getting it upgraded to the latest firmware (some PCIe & BIOS issues still persist that requires rebooting the host several times/updating the bios if available to get the device to become available).  I built a brand new Win7 VM and patched.  Then installed Tools, View Agent, VM OS optimizer, and Apex 2800 Driver.  I rebooted between each step and let the OS Optimizer fling do all it's recommended settings.  I also changed the reg key [HKLM]\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware SVGA DevTap\MaxAppFrameRate
(DWORD) to 0x3c (60Hz).

For testing I have a personal GTX 470 Modded to appear as a Quadro 5000.  In VMware ESXi I have the latest driver: NVIDIA-VMware_ESXi_5.5_Host_Driver  319.65-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820           NVIDIA    VMwareAccepted    2014-06-30.

With all of this in place (The GPU wasn't needed for the YouTube test) I was able to do the following:
1) With 8 cores assigned (Host in this test was a 2x E5506 Machine) and 2GB RAM I was able to play 1 60fps youtube video (using HTML5 and 2x speed) while also watching an additional 30fps video.  this was using 3 monitors on my desktop using the PCoIP 2.3.3 - 1745122 client.  The third monitor was showing the CPU Task manager to be 80+% utilized.

2) With 3 cores (Single CPU Host i5-2500k) and 6GB Ram.  This machine has the GPU set to Hardware 3D acceleration.  I am able to play CS:Source with a slight input lag, but no noticeable FPS lag.  I'm able to view the fuzzy cube demo from GPU Caps Viewer at ~60 FPS.

We're still doing more internal tests, but the APEX card is 100% instrumental in doing anything over about 15fps at 1080 resolution.  Below is the output of the card's info while streaming a 1080/60fps youtube video (used 80-100% of the 3cores of the i5-2500k as well).  You can see a single 1080p screen can use about 1/5 of the APEX card, but makes the VM undestiguishable from a physical PC.

Re: Horizon View 5.2 - Existing Pool Affected After Adding new Host cluster

You need to put the host back to where it was in vCenter, which should correct this issue you're experiencing in View. Always change where the pools are living in the View console first.

I wrote a blog post on a similar subject, but it was about migrating linked clones between two different clusters. It's pretty similar to your situation, except you have a single host, and a new cluster. I'd would recommend utilizing this process.

Black Screen From Home

I have a user that now gets a black screen when they login from home.  I tried to login form a different external computer and internally and the VM loads fine,. I uninstalled the view client and reinstalled with no luck.  Able to login fine with RDP.  Anyone have a clue what this might be on their computer that is causing the issue?

Thanks for that! Some progress as we managed to get some prints off! Using RDP on the second level and added a number of network printers on the base machine, which do appear on the last desktop and we can print.

The reason we are going down this route is we are being forced by internal policies to make the second view session (to third party network), from within an internal pool, although I agree that this could be a headache in terms of support, especially when a end user calls with a problem with "View" and trying to establish which pool they are having the issue in!

That is the plan for the moment although there are ongoing discussions to see about just accessing the view client from within the base desktop and not in the view session...

Same issue here

connection server:   5,3.0-1427931

Agent Version 5.3.1

environment upgraded from 5.0

Users are connecting mainly from thin clients , but also from android tablets

i am also getting reports of desktop consuming a lot of CPU resources but not sure if that's related.

Does the third party network have public access to their View environment? Has anyone answered the question, "Why can't we just connect straight to their view environment from an onsite location? Why does it have to be View in View?"

I'm sure already that you see the manageability problem with supporting nested View sessions.

Just my 2 cents, I'd push back on what's driving this requirement. If the security requirements are legit and this truly is the only way they want you to get in, it should work for you, but it's definitely not the best way to do it.

SVGA setup with View 5.3 and AMD FirePro S9000

Has anybody did this? I cant seem to find this card as supported with SVGA so I was just wondering. I was able to load the driver and everything according to the guide installed fine but when I start the XORG server it stays running for 5 seconds then stops. I don't see anything in the XORG log and i wasn't sure what to do in the Kernel log. Anybody else do this yet?

Pulling this out of nowhere. Did you ever find a resolution to this? We're experiencing pretty much the same exact behavior. Both our Virtual Centers will show as disconnected in our View Console, with a message of "The service is not working properly. Certificate is untrusted but the thumbprint for the certificate is accepted", however, after maybe a minute or 2 of absolutely NO interaction by myself or my team, they go back to green and working just fine. At no point do we see an interruption of services. Does that mean it's not a problem? I guess, still annoying.
