Horizon Client Problem

Hello,

I set up few machines inside vmware workstation (ESX, vcenter, viewconnection server and one DC). All goes to internet through NAT. However, if i select use https secure tunnel and blast secure gateway, it works from any device to access the virtual desktop from browser. If i select pcoip secure gateway, it works only from my pc. From other pc/ devices it gives an error and then two options (abort or continue). I edit the session timeout time, but this not help. It can be the performance issue ?

If you follow the Symantec KB articles (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH173650 and http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH180229) you can then configure the the management console to delete the old client computers on whatever schedule you set. We have ours set to delete stale clients after 24 hours and it's only during a recompose (where the whole pool gets deleted at once) that we ever get the license warnings. You can set that property in the Admin/Domain settings:

Bad SSL Cert on Compser server

I recently upgraded from View 5.2 to view 6.0 and now my Composer server Cert is bad.  Because of that i cannot recompose pools.  When i try to run sviconfig -operation=ReplcaeCertificate I get an error that says "Access is Denied".  I am currently logged in with domain admin rights and tried different users with the same message.  Can Anyone tell me how to get past this?  Thanks

Disregard.  I got it fixed.  Even though i was logged in as admin i needed to run command line elevated.  All is good.  thanks for looking.

Control PCoIP Recording Audio Bandwidth

We are currently running the Teradici Audio driver in our VMware View 6.01 environment.

It works great and we allow bi-drectional audio for making occasional MS Lync calls, etc.  We limit the audio bandwidth in our GPO to 150Kbps which controls playback but does not affect recoding bandwidth.  When we monitor the PCoIP bandwidth in vCOPS we see playback bandwidth staying where it belongs, but the return audio runs anywhere from 500-800kbps.

Is there anyway to tune/tweak that?  Any future enhancement here and/or suggestions?

Thanks!

Unable to launch from Pool FTPool01 for user Domain\Username: The Pool is empty

Hi all.

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

Horizon View version: 6

Guest desktop OS: Windows 8.1

By Power Policy al desktops in a pool is set to "Power Off".

By pool Policy 25 machines of 70 are set to "Remained Power On".

Today morning all users can't connect to the pool.

Horizon View Console showing an event with Audit failure "Unable to launch from Pool FTPool01 for user Domain\Username: The Pool is empty".

After manually power on some VMs through vSphere, console all VMs started up automatically.

I cannot find any information about why all machines are powered off and after manual power on of some machines, the pool began working normally.

Does it work when you don't specify the password in the vdmadmin command?

The Cert needs to be applied to the security servers only, in theory. In practice I've had to assign the Cert to the load balancer as well. The big thing you have to make sure you do is change the URL in the View administrator to match the URL on both security servers. Also when you import the certificate on the security servers you have to "mark the key as exportable" (it's a check box in the wizard). When connecting from the outside the security servers are what communicated with the desktop and clients (if secure gateway is enabled), the connection servers are used just to validate authentication and assign a desktop resource.

The linked clones reference a replica (typically stored in the same datastore) meaning all the reads for common data comes from those replica's. It is better to recompose your VM's in this scenario than to  svmotion them.

Kindle fire Keyboard does not come up

HI There,

I started using the Horizon View app to connect to a remote desktop on a kindle fire.  All went well but it seemed that after a while the keyboard would fail to come up. So if I wanted to enter some typing on the remote machine there was no keyboard to use.  I did get the function keys to show, but not the rest of the keyboard.

Further, after escaping the app the keyboard no longer shows up in other areas on the kindle until a full reboot (Hold power button for 30 seconds).  I'd normally not attribute this to one app simply because the keyboard failed after and outside the app, but the problem seems only related around times using the Vmware app.

I also use a bluetooth barcode scanner so conceivably, this could be causing a problem too, but was wondering if any other Kindle App users had this problem with the keyboard.

This should be because the "Drive letter" that is selected by default (during Pool Creation time) is conflicting with a Drive Letter inside the VM.

Revert the Parent VM to the snapshot that is being used for desktop provisioning. Then Power on the parent VM and check the Drive letters.

Now while creating the pool and while choose Persistent Disk configuration ensure the drive letters are not being used by Parent VM for other mounts.

Re: Floating Pool With Office 365?

Has anyone made any more progress or figured out a solid way to get Office 365 working with Linked clones? I have 8 or 9 resource pools, each with their own parent image and linked clones under it.

Would be nice if M$ would provide a installer for 365 that I could put on the parent images and then the users would just have to login the first time (1 activation) , but M$ said they won't provide a base installer.

I was worried that each time the desktop was recomposed it would require the user to login again (causing another activation) but I think since each linked clone has a persistant disk we would be ok.

Hoping to get some more ideas to get this to work. Current solution that I'm not happy about is just put a link to the installer on the desktop and after every recompose they have to reinstall/activate.

I tried it without a password and it didn't work.  I tried to try to create a kiosk account for my windows pc.  I launched it automatically from the commandline C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Client\bin\wswc  -unattended -password Secret -serverurl cscviewconnsrv.usadir.usa.usouthal.edu and that did work and it did log in with the kiosk account.   And in the connection server log it showed the domain in front of the user name for the windows pc, but I don't see that for the thin clients.

Here is part of the log of the connection server

Solidworks cpu calculations on vdi

$

Hi there,

We are running solidworks 2014 on a VMware view 5.3 environment but I’m having issues with the cpu speed.

With some functions which use the cpu for calculations (not the gpu) the speed is about 50% slower then a comparable physical machine.

For example when we have a fairly simple model and try to modify a sketch it takes significant more time in comparison to a physical workstation.

I timed the time it takes to modify a sketch with solidworks:

I have turned hypertreading off because when it is on it is even worse. (I've read somewhere that solidworks does not like to use hyperthreading)

2 cores: 01.03 min

4 cores: 01.30 min (i don't understand why it is not faster with 4 cores)

12 cores: 55 sec

24 cores: 51 sec

On a physical machine with 24 cores exact the same calculation takes 30 seconds.

I wonder what your vdi configurations are and if someone compared solidworks cpu calculations with a physical machine?

What are your experiences with the cpu performance on vdi's?

We are running the following configuration:

Host:

Dell R720

Grid k2

160 GB memory

2 E5-2695 xeon cpu's (24 cores)
vsphere 5.5

vmware view 5.3

VDI:

Windows 7 64 bit

4 gb memory (solidworks only uses 2 gb max in our case)

vdga / also tested vsga

different core configurations but 2 cores gives most acceptable configuration.

The physical workstation:

windows 7 64 bit

8 gb momory

2 xeon cpu's with 24 cores

nvidia quadro gpu

Thanks cheers

Arjan

Re: "The Group Policy Client service failed the logon. Access is denied." error on windows 7 Linked Clone desktops with Persona Management

I ran into an interesting problem last week when I was told that one of the users in a VMware View deployment. The majority of the desktops in the environment were linked-clones with a dedicated 40GB disk assigned to every user so that their profiles could get redirected to a persistent disk and thus retained their customized Windows and Office settings every time I refreshed the desktops with an updated image.  Seeing how no one else had issues with their desktops, I was curious as to why the user was experiencing this problem so I went ahead and logged onto her desktop to find that her profile was redirected to the persistent D drive but same user profile was also available in c drive.

I initially thought that the problem would be solved if I simply deleted the profile from within the master image but quickly noticed that it was a bit more demanding than that so after hacking away at the problem and finally fixing it,  I took the time to document the steps.

Check you firewall for rule "Inter-Pod API-In". For me, this rule was disable, so both Pod was not able to establish interpod connection.
