Re: Persona Management instead of Folder Redirection/Roaming Profiles

$

It is possible technically, as long as users reside in the same domain. So, users can use the same profile when logging in to View desktop and physical desktops. But, please be aware that persona doesn't support concurrent login. That means just only 1 user is allowed to login at the same time.

Regarding to license cost, please contact our sales representative.

Thanks,

Henky

Try to reconfigure vCenter server on View AdminUI. The error message is caused, you are using self signed certificate on vCenter, but it is allowed in Connection Server.

This problem eventually went away for us. I believe View 5.3.4 was ok and so far 6.1 also appears to not have this issue. I am not 100% sure it was a Horizon problem, but that seems most likely.

Security Server Clarification

We have been running a small VDI implementation for about two years and are on version 5.3. We now want to add remote access so I am setting up Security Server but could use some advice and/or clarification in a couple areas.

1. All the documentation I have read talks about setting it up in a DMZ. We do not use a DMZ. We have a Sonicwall at the perimeter and use NAT to access internal resources. In this case do we really need a Security Server or could I setup a NAT pointing to the Connection Server? Or do I still need to setup the Security Server behind the Sonicwall and NAT to it? (This is how I have it setup now, but not working yet).

2. I noticed in the View Manager that PCoiP is disabled on the Security Server unless in the Connection server the "Use PCoIP secure gateway for PCoIP connections to the desktop" is checked. Does this mean that if I implement Security Server all internal connection will go through it as well?

Thanks

I had the same problem, but in my case I had to disable "Above  4G  Decoding:" in the BIOS.

did you manage to find solution to this?

if not, try vdm_client.adm template, this one has got a policy setting called 'Enable the Shade' - this setting is by default disabled in Kiosk Mode so it doesn't allow me to minimize the remote desktop, when this is set to Enabled, it should allow you to work with base host OS. (I haven't tried it personally so cannot tell you with confidence but worth trying)

Limiting Client Folder Redirection in 6.1.1

Hi All,

I would like to be able to give certain users access to Client Folder Redirection, but not others.  All users login to the same RDS server.  From looking at the VMware GPOs, it seems this setting can only be controlled on a server basis, not user.  Are their any work arounds?

Thanks!

Horizon View Client for Chromebook?

I just started using the Horizon View Client on a Chromebook. Does anyone know if there is a keyboard mapping for the Windows key. CTRL + ALT + Backspace works like CTRL + ALT + DELETE, but I haven't found a way to do Windows shortcuts.

Thanks

Late reply!

This has been ongoing for a long time. It seems to get better then worse. We eventually found that the View Manager and vCenter Server VMs were losing network connection entirely occasionally. The two other VMs on the same machine had no problem. Memory was overallocated so we tossed more memory into the server and have not seen any more network outages that we can detect.

Since are better but there are still issues where the PCs freeze or go unresponsive for five minutes or so.

I am kind of frustrated that I can find zero information about these lines in the logs:

2015-07-16T10:14:24.269-04:00 INFO  (0C64-0FB4) <Tracker:Heartbeat> [TrackerManager] (server) Inbound queue stats: total=0, max=0, dropped=0

2015-07-16T10:14:24.269-04:00 INFO  (0C64-0FB4) <Tracker:Heartbeat> [TrackerManager] (server) Outbound queue stats: total=1597423, max=37, dropped=0

What is the deal with the outbound queue? Is it normal to have a large number there?

Then during the problems, the logs look like this:

Update local Outlook during Horizon session?

So, on laptops, we have a script that shell replaces to run the view client when on our internal network. Ideally, we'd like the local Outlook to update its OST while the horizon view client is running so that when the user is offline/has no network or internet, they can still work on Outlook which will be as up-to-date as when they were last in the office.

We don't want them to have to log on locally to update it if poss.

I have tried a couple various ways of scripting an Outlook open then update in the back ground based on suggestions found on line but they never seem to work (mainly because Outlook doesn't seem to connect properly during the shell replace.

Anyone any code that might work at all or ideas as to how best to this - it'd be much appreciated!

So after months of waiting this is what I get back from VMware:

"So that you have an update, it looks like the developers are thinking they will be updating the documentation to reflect how it works rather than change the workings of the software as the documentation update will be much quicker.  I don't see any discussion currently about changing the software for future releases at this point, but the discussion is still ongoing.

At this point have we met the expectations that we opened the SR under or did you need me to continue to hold this SR open looking for some additional information?"

Follow the KB here to clean up missing VMs. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2015112

If you followed the instructions verbatim and it doesn't resolve the issue, it's still possible that the there are other references in the View SQL database. Please contact VMware technical support if that's the case. They have a few SQL queries that are not public that they can use to ensure that the desktops are not in the View database.

Lastly, if the database has been verified your connection servers can be out of sync. Please see this other KB VMware KB: Recommended restart cycle of the VMware Horizon View environment for more information on how to restart your environment. If there's no cost to restarting your whole View environment then you can likely skip the previous suggestion checking for undocumented references in the database server. If this is the case, check the Windows events log for the ADAM events log and look for replication errors which may be the cause of the issues in the first place (which was the case in my View environment).

Confirm that your root image does not have a Microsoft Loopback adapter in addition to your regular network adapter.  We recently installed a version of Autodesk that for some reason added that loopback adapter.  We could not use PCoIP until that was removed from device manager on the VMs.

EDIT:  Also, confirm the windows firewall (or any firewall) is not blocking UDP traffic on port 4172

VMware View Linked Clone pool - Change SID of VMs

$
0
0

Dear community

This morning I've had the great idea to use sysprep instead of quickprep to change the SID for all VMs within the linked clone pools. Why? Because the customer only does have VMs and he uses KMS to activate Office and Windows so we need at least 50 different SIDs. Well I've created a Guest OS Customization file for Windows (OS is Windows 7) within vCenter (which is connected to View admin) and I did:

Target Virutal Machine OS: Windows

Use Custom Sysprep Answer File: No

Name: Name of the file

Owners Name: xy

Owner Organization: xy

dfgdfg

VM Name: Use the virutal machine name

Productkey: Leave blank

Admin Password: Set twice

ZimeZone: GMT+1

Run Once: None

Network: Typical with DHCP

Domain: Customer Domain incl. Credentials

OS Options: Create new SID

Finish, went to View Admin created a new pool and set Guest Cust. to Syprep (Filename). Recomposed the pool and it worked fine until the generalization starts... it stucks at Regional Settings, when i reboot the same. When i klick net it asks me for a Computername and for a password.

Well:

1) Why is it stucking there? Further yes it has to stuck because i was not able to specify regional settings or is it not required? Why does it pop up then?

2) Why is it asking me for a Computername? I told him use existing one.

3) Why is it asking me for a Password? I told him what to use.

Well I toigh ok let's use a sysprep answwer file which I've included in a second guest cost. file (withi the guest in addition reset SID). Well this works greate except of the naming: I told him in the answerfile to use the %computername% variable which is for sure the master name, so VDI does not change that name.....

1) Would the sysprep answer file the rightway anyway?

2) How will i get the new name out of View for the VM for exmaple VM001 instead of Master001

If i check the guest cust. file without sysprep answer file i see that there are function which can crreate names for the VMs like vim.virtualmachinenamegenerator (or something like that) is that possible to use in sysprep as well? Well at the end I just want to change the SID of the VMs each time they getting recomposed to have enough unique SID in the network! How do I need to achieve this?

Best regards,

Re: Can't set Computer Name as Virtual Machine Name with Customization Specification

When you get to the computer name section, I choose the "use the virtual machine name" option.

That one is not possible? You have to tick "user answer file" then you are not able to say use existing name or you don't tick and you are able to say use existing name.

How did you take care of this?
