Re: Setting that is set on the Master/Golden Image will NOT stick once it got provisioned

This would need to be set in the Default User profile, which is why it's not propagating to the users. Modify it via there and it should stick as their profiles are created; alternatively, set it as a GPO.

Re: Access for interal AND external users by means of a single Connection Server?

Just played with the PCoIP Secure Gateway option a bit more. If the PCoIP Secure Gateway option is enabled and configured with the IP of the Connection Server I can access applications internally as well as externally. If I disable the PCoIP Secure Gateway, only internal access works.

So I can have a single Connection Serer for internal and external access, but that means internal connections are channeled trough the Connection Server. This is a unnecessary hop for internal clients which can directly access the RDS host and it's also a scalability challenge. Furthermore redundancy becomes much more important, as the Connection Server not only brokers new user requests but handles the whole session. If it dies all users are affected.

So, is there a better configuration?

No, that's the only way you can do it for both internal and external users to share the same connection server - enabling the PSG setting is per CS. If you want the PSG on for external users (and this is pretty much a requirement unless you're using a thirdparty VPN), but off for internal users, they will have to point to different connection servers and therefore you'll need two.

Why Linked Clone disk so slow?

Hopefully someone have the answer or some advice to get better performance with VMware View Linked Clone VM. I'm just trying to figure out why disk performance is so slow with Linked Clone disk if compare with normal disk. Just compare the two simples tests done with Iometer with the same config (4K, 80% write, 100% random). The first test is inside the Linked Clone disk (C:\) and the second one is through normal disk added to the same VM on the same datastore.

RESULTS with C:\ (Linked Clone)

iops: 376

Throughput: 1,6MBps

Latency: 25ms

CPU: 62%

RESULTS with D:\ (normal disk added on the same datastore - Thin Provisionning)

iops: 3369

Throughput: 13,8MBps

Latency: 3,0ms

CPU: 13,5%

The latency is almost 10 times longer and the IOPS is almost 10 times less with Linked Clone disk. I have attached the Iometer results here combine with the ESXTOP results. The ESXTOP shows the same poor results but strangely the VM do a lot of reads with the Linked Clone test. The CBRC is activated on this pool but I'm not thinking it could have an effect since the Iometer disk is on the "delta" so not in the digest disk.

I'm pretty sure the problem is not with hardware but just in case, here the setup:

ESXi 5.5 (Dell Poweredge R620)

Equallogic PS6100XV

4 X iSCSI 1Gbs paths

View Horizon 5.3.1

vCenter 5.5

Windows 7 x64 base image, 2 vcpu

setting up Nvidia K1 Grid to support 4 screens in Vmware view 5.3

Hi all,

i recently picked up some Nvidia K1 Grid Cards in order to beef up our view 5.3 environment. our setup is quad monitors with Wyse p45 thin clients.

the issue i'm running into is i cant get it to support 4 screens properly.. in view administrator as soon as you turn on 3d it limits you to 2 screens. has anyone found a work around for this.

is this something that vmware is planning to address?

Thanks

If you have a security server paired to a connection server, my experience is that the tunnel and gateway options on the connection server must match the security server settings. Hence the need for at least two connection servers to service external and internal traffic.

My preferred minimum config to provide internal direct access and secure external access with redundancy?

  • 4 connection servers, (2 internal, 2 paired with security servers)
  • 2 security servers
  • Internal load balancing between 2 internal connection servers
  • External load balancing between 2 external security servers

Keep in mind all the connectivity requirements as well.

A couple observations:

  1. Your %VMwait time on the linked clone image is way high. 90% means that most of the time something is choking out CPU availability. Notice on your normal run it's a nice lean 1%.
  2. Are you sure you're using the exact same IO meter profile? On your linked clone run the HBA is 60 Read 40 write and your "normal disk" is 20 Read 80 write. That makes no sense if they're the same. Can you post the exact profile you're using?
  3. You have multiple VMs running on this host at least as ESXTOP reveals. Are these on the same LUN and host you're testing on? If so, they may be inducing load and muddying your test results. I usually run these tests with a single VM with many workers. Check out this iometer profile from the Atlantis guys for a standardized VDI run. VDI Performance - Using Iometer to Simulate a Desktop Workload | Atlantis Computing Blog

It sounds to me like you're getting bitten by something in your testing configuration. Isolate the test to a single host and datastore and double check the iometer profile.

Edit: Make sure the datastore no other load on it if you're using IOmeter to measure the total available performance.

Is there anyway to extend the connection server broker timeout?

What type of desktop is it?  We had a MAC user who couldn't connect from home.  It turned out that there were certain video cards in some MACs that wouldn't work over PCoIP.  RDP was the solution.

View Storage Accelerator

Hello-

We are running an ESXi 5.1.0 1065491 cluster with View 5.2.0 build 987719. I do not have CBRC enabled under Software-Advanced Settings on the hosts.  Additionally, on my Connection Brokers within each Pool under the Advanced Storage option I do not have the Use View Storage Accelerator option checked.   I have confirmed on my specific linked clones there are no disk digests being created, even thought the tasks are running.   For the past few months though I have been getting hundreds of "Recompute virtual disk digest' tasks running in vCenter. .  I found a VMware KB stating I could ignore this issue, so I have been.  Recently though I have been having issues with my hosts going to a disconnected state due to the vpxa daemon failing.  In an effort to fix this new issue I have looked again at the recompute virtual disk digest tasks and just noticed that on the CB under Servers-vCenter-Edit-Storage I actually do have the Enable View Storage Accelerator option checked.  Evidently it is on be default.

Can I safely uncheck this option and turn off this feature since I don't want it?  Additionally, if I do uncheck this option does anyone know if it will stop those tasks from running in vCenter?  Finally, is this non disruptive?  I saw some posts stating if I turn off this feature it could disconnect the host, but it looks like that bug was fixed on build 1065491.  Can anyone confirm?

Thank you,

Erik

horizon printer redirection

Hi

I am exploring the possibilities of vmware horizon v6.It's an amazing product, but I cannot get printer redirection to work the way I want it to work.

Printer redirection to RDSH Servers using RDP protocol works just fine. However as soon as I switch to PCoIP protocol to connect to the RDSH pool or (Remote) Applications, there's no redirection taking place.

Instead the logviewer comes up with 'Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy. Error 36. Source TerminalServices-PnPDevices

There are no gpo settings in place that could cause this.

I read about possible solutions to use local printing instead, but I cannot do this because the printers that should be redirected are offsite. I.o.w. I am using blast gateway to connect to the horizon desktop pool and / or apps.

Can someone confirm this is an issue with horizon view v6 or am I missing s'thing?

Correct, only 2 monitors are supported. I however got 4 to work with a K5000, totally unsupported of course but still...

Correct, ThinPrint with PCoIP to a RDSH Appliction or Published Desktop is not yet supported.

Thanks for confirmation. I had my suspicion.

Is there a way to default the remote apps to use RDP instead of PCoIP?

Any idea when we can expect PCoIP printer redirection?

Not that I am aware of.

Its VMwar'e policy not to discuss future features and timelines on public forums, you need to talk to your local VMware team and get an NDA briefing.

I just did it in one my environments, 5.x premier was able to upgrade to view 6.x standard from the my vmware portal.
