> I am not certain that all features work. I have a nasty feeling that USB redirection will not work, since I have never gotten that to work on Ubuntu 64 bit

Hi

A few days ago I made a Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 32bit LiveCD that has working USB-redirection - well if a USB-flash drive connected to a Workstation VM counts. The stick appeared in the Windows-Desktop without any extra work required on the LiveCD.
Disconnecting/ reconnecting similar devices worked flawless.
I have not tested the SmartCard features yet - simply because I dont have a test-environment.
I have a 64bit based LiveCD scheduled next week - guess then I will be also able to provide instructions for USB-redirection.

The LiveCD boots - tests if network is up and if necessary loads a Wifi-connection , the WiFI settings can be stored in a persistence container if required.
When network is up it connects to a preconfigured broker with a preconfigured commandline. Cerificates can also be used.
When the session is finished the LiveCD reboots. I customise such mini Linuxclients when customers ask for a way to make sure their remote-workers dont use a virus-polluted environment to start their remote View-Desktops.
This LiveCDs can be used from CD,USB-stick,harddisk or sd-cards, use icewm as windowmanager so that I could remove all unwanted ways to interact with the LiveCD itself. If the users breaks out of the View-session the system reboots.

Previous versions of this LiveCDs were all 64bit based to allow booting on recent hardware - optional with EFI-firmware,
As this is the first public download with USB-redirection -  USB-features were on top of the wishlist so I started with a 32bit version to get an environment close to the one that was used to create the Ubuntu-package.
In the LiveCD I simply start vmware-usbarbitrator and vmware-view-usbd from /etc/rc.local - on a regular system it probably requires more work to start those services nicely.
The LiveCD is not yet ripped to the bare essentials - but with 500MB it is small enough to load it into RAM on many old notebooks.

I will update this post if I have the 64bit CDs ready.

Sorry - cant offer downloads - dont want to receive mail from VMware lawyers - all I can safely offer is to customize one for you during a remote "consulting" session.
If anybody knows a legal way to prepare such CDs as a public download that will not end with "Ulli in jail" please let me know.

Hi Mpryor,

Thank you very much for your help. That was spot on :-). I imported the Direct-Connect template, enabled MMR and now it works like a charm! Somehow I totally overlooked that setting.

NAT to Horizon view desktops

Hi Guys,

Have an issue setting up a Horizon view environment in regards to NAT;

The connection server has a Public IP

The View Agents have a NATed IP

The issue is that connections to horizon view desktops are always trying to use the INTERNAL IP of the machine and we would like to NAT them (sorry, but very needed)

the agent gpo has a policy for using the DNS name for resolution of the horizon view desktop "Connect using DNS name" which appears to be for this very situation however the policy does not appear to be taking effect and the connection server will always try to use the internal IP (security server can only access the vdi desktop by NAT'd address).

Does anyone know how to force this behavior for the connection server?

Persistent disk backup in VDI enviroment

In my company we have a VDI enviroment based on view 6.0.1, all virtual desktop are linked clone, with dedicated user assignment and persistent disk for user data folders.

My question is:

How Can I backup persistent disks, or only the data stored inside?

I've tryed with various backup solution like Veeam or Acronis, but no one can backup persistent disk.

There is an alternative? Or in which way we can backup only data stored inside persistent disk?

Thanks

Francesco

Have you looked into using an in guest agent to backup the data?    How do you backup user data on physical desktops now?   Can that same method be used for virtual?

If you disable provisioning on the pool then it shouldn't create any new desktops.  I'm not sure that is a long term solution but it should stop the desktop from being re created.

What about storage level backup ?

If you choose to store "Persistent Disks" on separate data-store, it will be convienient I guess

One way could be list based provisioning., where you need to provide list of names instead on a pattern

Re: Applications resizing when reconnecting to View 6.0 desktop

I created a new Gold Image and created a snapshot with the gold image's screen resolution at 1920x1080.  I created a test pool with the pool settings for 4 monitors at the highest resolution.  The VMs have 125MB of allocated vRAM.  The same symptoms are still happening.  On a PC with a 22" 1920x1080 monitor, I connect to a Desktop and open an application, Outlook for instance, I then disconnect (badge tap..we are using Imprivata with RF badge readers) to disconnect form the desktop.  I then badge tap to reconnect to the same desktop and Outlook reduces in size like the attached picture

After you disconnect, if you open the VM in a vsphere console, how big is the resolution?

Re: Applications resizing when reconnecting to View 6.0 desktop

I cannot tell what the actual resolution is after a disconnect since the virtual desktop is at the Ctrl-Alt-Delete screen when I open the VM vSphere console.  From the vSphere console, if I Ctrl-Alt-Insert and log onto the desktop as the disconnected user, the desktop shows the resolution at 1920x1080 and I can see the Outlook screen reduced in size

SQL Query - "Last Log on in" VMWare View Virtual Desktop

$

Hi All -

We are running out of room on our datastores to spin up additional VMWare View virtual desktops for our end users.  We know there are VMs out there that are just sitting idle and have not been used in a while.  We'd like to clean this up.

I've been searching for a "last log in time" or something that would indicate whether the VM has been used within the last 180days so that we can delete them.  I'm not finding anything out there that would help me with this goal.

Is there a SQL table with this information or something similar?

Please let me know.

So at least in this particular case the windows store being disabled was causing the issue. Which I find odd since we have done this on physical machines without any problems syspreping. Undid all the MAK stuff since we use volume keys and don't really need to worry about rearm counts (we get 999)

Are these dedicated pools or floating pools?   On our dedicated pools we use the events data to determine if a user has logged in over the course of 90 days.

All virtual desktops are assigned to individual users.

Does that help?

How are you querying the events data?

VMware Horizon Client 'Login as current user' Not Working After Reimaging Workstation

$

Hello,

I'm running VMware Horizon Client ver 3.1.0 on Windows 7 Enterprise x64 on an AD domain. When I install the software on a new computer, the 'Login as current user' is working correctly and all is right in the world. However, if I reimage a workstation and add it to the domain using the same computer name (even when I delete the computer object out of AD first), the 'Login as current user' functionality does not work and instead I receive error message 'The Connection Server authentication failed to log in as current user'. If I deselect 'Login as current user', I am able to manually enter the credentials that I am logged on with at the prompt and it works correctly. Does anyone have any ideas why the functionality isn't working on reimaged machines?

Here is the Windows Security Event Viewer entry showing the failure when I try to connect using 'Login as current user'

An account failed to log on.

Subject:

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.

The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.

The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.

  - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.

  - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.

  - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

And here is the VMware log during a failed login attempt (username and VDI server name removed for security)

The events data is kept in a SQL backend.   We just have a SQL query that allows us to specify a user and the amount of days to see when they last logged in.
