Re: SQL Query - "Last Log on in" VMWare View Virtual Desktop

Right I understood it was a SQL query on the backend.

I am more looking to see not a particular user though.  I wanted to see if  it were possible to point out all VMs that had a last log in of 90 days or over for house cleaning.

Horizon Client Freezes for 3-5 Seconds Randomly

Hello Everyone,

I have been chasing a ghost in my VDI environment for a while now with no success. All of our VDI users (myself included) experience a weird freezing event with our desktops that will happen randomly. The desktop could go days without a freeze, and then do it 3 times in the same day. When the desktop does freeze, I can still move the mouse around but I can not click on anything. Once the desktop unfreezes, it registers all the move clicks and button presses that occurred while it was frozen and performs them all at once. It is very similar to the way a PC acts when its memory is over consumed.

Here are my troubleshooting steps so far:

  1. Since I am able to move the mouse around, that led me to believe it was a problem with the client so I had my users write down the time when the machine froze. With those times, I scanned through all the VDM logs on the physical PC for any logged event at those times. I could not find anything. I even checked the agent logs during those time periods and still found nothing logged.
  2. I called VMware support and had a tech remote into my system. I gave him the time periods of the freeze events that occurred that day and he could not find anything in the logs. He also checked the Connection server for PCOIP drops but could not find anything. I was informed that there was no evidence to declare the problem VMware related.
  3. I installed and configured vRealize for Horizon and monitored PCOIP traffic and bandwidth. Both look good. I noticed that vRealize is claiming that the VDI desktops are over consuming memory. they are running on 4GB and claim they are using all 4GB. However, task manager on the VM's themselves report that average consumption is 2GB. (This may be unrelated but thought I would mention it)
  4. Thinking that the VM's needed more processors and memory, I upgraded the VM's to 5GB ram and 4vcpu's (which is over kill for our usage). 4 hours after the recompose with new hardware specs, I experienced another freeze. I immediately looked at the memory usage trace I had running for this machine and it was holding steady at 2GB.

We are using the latest of everything for software. 5.5 for hosts, vcenter and vsphere. Also running Horizon with view 6.0.1.

Any ideas in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated!

What type of storage?  Response times?

For me this was either a bad cert import or UAC interfering with the cert import, disabled UAC, deleted and re-imported the cert and the error went away (unfortunately not my overall issue) but I was able to get my VMware Horizon View Blast Secure Gateway service to run and not get stuck in a paused state.

Hope this helps!

View Client allow login with expired password

Hi ,

One of our users changed his Windows password through the VMware view client . After few minutes he logs off and logs back in with the old password and view client allowed him to log back in .

But though he was allowed to log in when he got connected tot he desktop " Incorrect username password please enter the appropriate credentials" . Is there a way we can avoid this ?

We are using Horizon View 6 with Wyse D90D7 Windows embedded clients.

Horizon View Client version 3.1

Please advise

This is going to be down to the local DC to the thinclient. Was a password is changed it should be replicated instantly as it's flagged as an urgent change. Best to check the local DC and that it's replicating to OK. Can you see where the user is changing his password and check AD Sites and Services and check your clients are in a site with a DC that is working. If it's a RODC then check the password replication policy.

BROKER_MACHINE_ASSIGNED_UNAVAILABLE -> The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your system administrator.

Hi all,

We have a production VDI with the following configuration:

1- Dedicated pool, static assigned users and PCoIP Zero Clients (hardware), configured in kiok mode (using custom-users).

2- Pool configuration is: always powered, user cannot reset the VM and change the protocol, never logoff.

     3- 10 Win7 32bits and 5 WinXP 32bits VMs.

     4- ESXi /VCenter 5.1 and View 5.2.

In some cases the zero client disconnects, pressing the button or when losing the network connection. Then never achieve a connection to VM again.

Zero Client or View Client (software client) reports this error:

The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your system administrator

The status on the VM in the View Panel is Disconnected or Available, VCenter not show errors or events, the machine is ON and console access is OK.

The only way to solve the problem is resetting the VM. This action indicate that the problem is in the View Agent, not in the View Server (broker).

The problem occurs randomly, when you reset the VM, all works fine. You can connect and disconnect the zero client many times without problems. In some moment zero client cannot obtain a connection anymore.

We cannot reproduce the problem with software client "View Client", this is the reason that VMware support said that the problem is in Zero Clients. Is not totally true because

the testing with software client is not the same environment of hardware client. We have connected some USB sticks (hardware licenses) on hardware client. I'm not sure is it change something.

We checked all the logs files from broker and agent, and we saw nothing strange.

I think that View Agent have some problem, we need to know how we can check the availability of agent ? anyone has had the same problem ?

Thanks in advance, regards

Alejandro

Hi,

how to install a separte Security Gateway Server only for Blast? Now I have one security server with pcoip and want blast (Version View6.02) on a other separate server because the firewall rules. The blast port must be 443 and not 8443. How is the setup for only blast? I don't want a mismatch on the existing security server.

Thanks for your help!!!

The LiveCD boots - tests if network is up and if necessary loads a Wifi-connection , the WiFI settings can be stored in a persistence container if required.

When network is up it connects to a preconfigured broker with a preconfigured commandline. Cerificates can also be used.

When the session is finished the LiveCD reboots. I customise such mini Linuxclients when customers ask for a way to make sure their remote-workers dont use a virus-polluted environment to start their remote View-Desktops.

This LiveCDs can be used from CD,USB-stick,harddisk or sd-cards, use icewm as windowmanager so that I could remove all unwanted ways to interact with the LiveCD itself. If the users breaks out of the View-session the system reboots.

Hi. I have managed to create custom live CD with ubuntu 14.10 i386 on it. With the UCK utility. Firstly it's an elephant size about 1.1Gb and have a lot of stuff you don't need for a machine that have only purpose to remote connect. Second one I don't know how to customize ubuntu to work in kiosk-like way, as you mentioned before (reboot after you close view client). So if you can share with me, what you are doing with system during customization (if it's your way to make custom ubuntu), that will be enough and will not put you in jail:)

Two things I want to know:

1. What I can do with the system to make it light and act like a single purpose live cd. With VMWare client autostart and reboot after client is closed.

2. Where to put view-default-config  to make sure Client will connect with parameters I need. (I have read the horizon-client-linux-document.pdf)

Or you can share your version via some different source (contacted you in skype).

I've got an all flash SAN which is only hitting around 1600 IOPS. Its connected to our VDI cluster via multiple iSCSI connections with jumbo frames enabled.

Persona was first introduced in View 5.0 and has been in all releases since.  It is included in 6.0 and later as well.  You must have a Premier license to have access to Persona Management.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks,

Erik

Did this just start happening recently?   Any way to tie it down a known change in the environment such as View Upgrade, View agent upgrade, etc?

Unfortunately no. The View environment is only about 5 months old and we have been experiencing this problem from the start. However, we have one user that is running the Horizon client off an HP Thinclient with embedded Linux, that has not experienced the problem. All other users are running on Windows 7 32bit. I'm not sure if that's a clue yet or not. I'm trying to get a few more users on Linux distro's to test that theory. (But this would not explain why thousands of companies are using Horizon perfectly fine on their Windows environments and I cant)

Printer redirection on Remote Desktop/Terminal Server question

$

Hi

This is the scenario: User using a thin client > connect to MS RDS TS server (connected to network printers) > Launch VMware View client > View Desktop  (network printer not mapped)

Is there a way to enable these same network printers to show up on the View Desktop?

If I connect to the ViewDesktopfrom a laptop/desktop network printers show up fine.

I believe this is an issue with Terminal Services and View.

Anyone has a solution for this please?

Upgrade to Horizon View 6.0

Does anyone know if I can continue to use View Agent 5.3 after upgrading View components to 6.0?

If not, are there any recommendations for upgrading the agents on all of the desktops? I can use Microsoft System Center, which we use to distribute software, etc., now. If I have to upgrade the agents, does this require VM Tools reinstall as well?

All of my vDesktops are full, dedicated machines (not, linked clones or view composer machines).

Hi

As far as I know UCK takes an existing Ubuntu-ISO and then just adds a few packages and then rebuilds the iso - is that right ?

I do not use UCK at all.
Instead I start with a fresh installed system from scratch. The basesystem just has  Ubuntu-minimal and is a naked cli-only setup.
Then I enable the apt-source that has the old 2.2 deb-package named vmware-view-client: i386.
After apt-get update I basically install
apt-get install xorg icewm lightdm vmware-view-client wicd wicd-gtk lxrandr --no-install-recommends

Installing the old version is a easy way to get the dependancies for View.

Once the old version works I run

apt-get purge vmware-view-client

and once that version is removed the new one can be installed.

All that happens in a VM for convenience reasons.

Last step then uses a shell-script that takes the existing, running system and creates a completely new LiveCD from it.
The shell script I use to build the LiveCD is similar to the one that was used until one or two years ago named Remastersys.
The remastersys script is still available - see about.remastersys

But Remastersys is a dead project so the code may disappear soon or will stop to work with latest Ubuntu/Debian versions.

Create a kiosk-like restricted UI ...

That is quite easy: install xorg without Windowmanager.
Next install icewm and lightdm.
Configure lightdm for auto-login of the main-user and set icewm as the default in lightdm.conf

Then just replace the files in /home/user/.icewm with the ones that I have.

I will document that part now and post instructions soon.

The 5.3 agent should continue to work with the 6 broker, it is recommended to upgrade at some point. If you are also upgrading the underlying vSphere then vmtools needs to be done first not as a dependency of the agent but due to some potential to overwrite drivers installed by the agent.
