Re: View 6: Minimum number of ready machines during Composer operations not working

Wow, I'll have to give that a shot during my next recompose then.  This is something that needs to be fixed, I shouldn't have to modify that value every time I issue a recompose.

I know it sounds crazy, but it really is working as designed. If for example you've got the value set to 50 then you should be able to have 50 sessions running in the pool during the recompose, the fact that 30 of them are already connected before you start is unrelated. What you're looking for is a feature that always preserve the pool headroom value during a recompose, so that a recompose will not happen if it's expected to violate the headroom count - this is slightly different, would be very useful but sadly doesn't exist today.

Using Outlook 2013 advanced search on Linked-Clone machines

Hey everybody,

i know that was a question that has been asked before but that was long ago and i hope there may be a few more workarounds now...

We just startet our new VDI project based on VMware View 6.1.1. We are currently deploying Windows 7 with Office 2013.

Based on the recommendation of VMware we deactivated the "Windows Search" Service. The only Problem is, that disabling the Service also takes away the advanced search functionality (from, topic, etc...).

I know we could just enable the service but i think that would produce a lot of I/O because the index has to be rebuild everytime a user logs in...

Are there any workarounds for this kind of problem?

We are also using the VMware UEM. Maybe that could help?

Tell me, if you guys need any further information!

Kind regards,

View Persona advice

Hi and thanks for looking at my discussion. We have a long standing VMWare View 5.2 environment that is currently using VMWare Persona Management backed via a virtual single node 2008 R2 file server.  We get about 600 concurrent sessions during peak hours and to be honest its worked pretty well for us so far.  The issue we have is with maintenance as we are 24x7x365 and as its a single node if we turn it off it causes issues for logged in users while its offline.  I'm in the process of re-building our environment with Horizon 6 and wanted to start again with the Persona infrastructure and wanted some advice.  I've looked into a clustered file server using MSCS and I’ve read information about DFS solutions but just wanted some real life examples setups that would fit with our 365 working patterns.

I experienced similar behavior with F-secure running on the VDI-desktops. Maybe a virus scanner is the culprit for you as well?

Re: Urgent Help!!! one of my client meets - "the view agent reports that this desktop source is unable to accept connections"

I see floods of this message in my connection server events after upgrading to 6.1.1 from 5.x -- 6.1.1 seems to be significantly more troublesome and less reliable than 5.x -- really wish we could downgrade at this point..

"the pending session on machine xx for user xxx has been expired” . but i then assigned another user to the same desktop, everything looks fine." -- identical symptom on my end

"AGENT_ERR_REQUEST_OVERLAP" -- also see lots of these

"AGENT_ERR_LOGOFF_IN_PROGRESS" -- also see floods of these now, when inspected the machines are already logged off. Allowing a different user to connect usually works without issue.

We have updated the agents on known-good golden templates and the issues occur, and we have tried rebuilding from scratch and the issues still occur. The problem appears to lie with the Agent or Connection Servers themselves. Very frustrating -- our Help Desk is getting hammered with calls from disconnected users trying to reconnect, as well as first-logon users who cannot connect to their floating desktops in the mornings.

I also notice that some events are not being written to the log after upgrading to 6.1.1 -- event volume has been very high since the upgrade (many many warnings / errors due to decreased reliability of the farm) so I wonder if the CS is getting overwhelmed and dropping some events?

Matthew,

Did you ever make any progress on this issue?  We've been experiencing similar issues with our new VDI environment.

Re: Horizon view maintenance mode.

So it doesn't seem so... What about this; is there any change at all tot he gust machine when it is in maintenance mode? A drop in a particular tcp connection for example, or a command that I can run on the guest that will return a different message if it's in maintenance mode than if it is not?

If there's nothing at all that can be determined from the guest then what are my options? Can I make an api call to one of the VMWare appliances to get what I need? Can I receive a syslog message or an snmp trap? If so can these be easily separated out in a multi tenanted environment so that the hosting partner can easily just let me get this information via an api call or just receive this information via the log message or trap?

Thanks.

VMware view connection servers slow

HI All,

We’ve observed inconsistency in data in view horizon console from the connection server USVMwareview1.

The link https://vmware view1/admin takes a lot of time to load and refresh data after logging in.

The data on connecting to horizon console from rest of the connection servers is consistent and loading and refreshing of data is also normal on them.

VMware View version 5.2

Any help on this issues much appreciated

thanks

The error code you mentioned seems there was something wrong in desktop side and root-cause analysis. I suggest you to open Support Request ticket.

That was a problem with appvolumes

  • reg.exe add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\svservice\parameters /t REG_DWORD /v VolDelayLoadTime /d 0 /f

did fix it, but login times are slower now

Re: VmWare View With Samba Domain

Hi,

You can try to establish domain trust between Windows 2012 domain and Samba domain. I'm not sure that it is a good idea, to be honest...

I think it will be much easier to create new accounts in your domain and they will connect to the connection server with the new accounts..

Re: Events not being recorded in Event DB

I suppose that could be the problem. I'm on 6.1. This is really becoming a problem since I'm not able to see events and troubleshoot. Is there a way to check if the events are logged on the connection server itself? to check if it's just not making it to the DB?

I have 4 connection server (2 internal and 2 external) and they all point to the same DB. I don't have a "prefix" set. Could that be the problem? I never understood what the prefix stood for.

Desktop pool without domain

Hello,

I am setting up an environment for a tradeshow booth.  The idea is that sales people can boot up a copy of a vm running a piece of our software to demo to potential customers.

These VM's are not on a network, and therefore are not needed to be a member of a domain.  Just simply a standalone VM.

My question is, when I get to the guest customization aspect of the setup, I am prompted for a domain.  I do not wish to use one at all.

Is there a way to bypass the guest customization, or set it up so I don't have to use one, specifically to not join a domain.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Brandon

Again, these warning messages and problems are occurring across multiple ( >8) floating desktop pools,  comprised of both upgraded previously-working templates and brand-new templates built expressly for troubleshooting.

I find it highly unlikely that the desktops are the source of the issues considering that the only change on most of them has been upgrading the View Agent. It is worth noting the 6.0.1 agent works ok, and the 5.x agents work flawlessly on the same machines. All indications lean on the 6.1.1 agent (or possibly the connection servers) being the source of the issues.

I have had a ticket open for several weeks and VMware is currently just log hungry, I don't think there is any real answer on the way (e.g. I don't think the real answer to these problems is known yet).

ESX VM. From the docs, it would seem that installing the agent would be limited to desktop mode only. This didn't really work as expected except when using @Sanjay's suggestion.
