How to best setup View Connection Server and Composer to limit single point of failure?

Hello all,

Just had a few quick questions:

1.)  How is everyone limiting the View Connectoin Server to a single point of failure.  All the reading I've done it looks like everyone sets up two connectoin servers and either does DNS round robbin on it, or puts both connection servers behind a load balancer

2.)  What happens if the View Connection server goes offline while users are logged in and actively using desktops?

3.)  How do you protect View Composer from single point of failure.  It looks like most people are installing this on there vCenter server and just leaving it to VMware HA.

4.)  What happens if View Composer goes down and you have active desktop sessions being used by users that are linked clones

5.)  What does the View Connection Server Replication Partner used for?  Is this a new feature of View 6 that creats some form of Cluster for the connection server?

Let me know,

Thanks

1. Yes. Need a load balancer. Something better than a DNS round robin since those go based on ping (host response) and not necessarily whether the service is up (port 80/443 responding with 404)

2. User gets disconnected. When reconnect they can continue where they left off.

3. pretty much it. Also ensure regular backups are done by the connection server. Remember that if you need to restore, restore both the AD LDS and Composer SQL backup.

4. Should be fine. The only issue is during provisioning, deleting a linked clone or creating one. Then could be a problem. Refresh should be ok

5. Replication partner? Do you mean the Replica Server? It's just an identifier during install as to whether, when installing the Connection server, you are creating a new View instance or expanding an existing one. It ends up as a peer to other connection servers within the same instance (POD).

Ahh okay, thanks for all the awnsers, that clears it all up nicely

So the composer is just like VC which if its down you just can't make any changes until its back online but everything continues on as it should.  In which case I could see why this is a good fit/role to install on the VC server as well.

Thanks again!

Turns out our disconnects are being caused by Session Timeouts but the odd thing is the session times never hit the 20 hour maximum set.  So I'm still looking into it.

Well.. that's an "it depends.." kind of thought. You need to consider how busy your vCenter is. Composer can generate it's own load and if the vCenter is already swamped, this won't help. For a small environment, I'd say ya, sure. Have them on the same Windows VM (obviously cannot do this with the appliance since Composer is Windows-only). But larger environments performance testing may be needed to determine if they should be together or separate.

Yeah this is just for a quick proof of concept at the moment.  However if it goes live or scales out, it will get its own server.

Thanks again!

epa80,

If memory serves, it was a known issue with the vSphere 5.1 SSO service.  It will not close TCP/IP connections properly until it runs out of ports.  Restarting the service would clear this error - I believe there was an update for that.

You are correct, Horizon View is not designed to be used in a environment when you need true multi-tenancy, there are ways of getting it to work in that way but usually requires a lot of manual steps and might get you into unsupported configurations.

Luckily there is a solution to that, its called VMware DaasS (formaly Desktone), it is built for multi-tenancy all the way through.

Could you have this verified somewhere? I have been running this tool in many places without any indication of malware.

I opened a ticket with Dell/Sonicwall that is reporting the detection.

I personally cant download the tool because of the detection but it looks like you are not having any problems.

If you don't use a Dell/Sonicwall then everything should be good.

Its funny that the sonicwall is detecting a Trojan from the labs website on a tool that you would run on all of your master images, but when I downloaded other tools from the same labs.vmware website it did not block them and detect a Trojan.

View Client for Android - audio error

We are installing and configuring Horizon View 6.0.0 build-1884746 accessing from android tablets with the View Client 3.0.0-1887158, and we have a problem when playing the audio.

When we reproduce an audio file in the View desktop, the audio arrive to the tablet without hear the beginning of audio. For example, if we run an audio file that says the word "potato" in the tablet we hear "ato".

We have proven that when just finished the audio, we come back to run it inmediately , we hear it well, but if we wait a couple of seconds to run it, then again don't we hear the beginning.

Somebody know that it can be? Is it a limitation of view client for android?

Note: It is the same problem with any type and model of android (tablets and phones). If we do it from a windows computer with the View Client for windows, is heard well.

can I apply different GPO policies to different Users in View ?

Hi All,

We can apply GPO policies to a desktop pool in View. This policy will be applied to all desktops in the pool.

Q: can we apply policy to a desktop only if a specific user is logging onto the desktop ? (and apply different policies for different users)

(I am looking to apply certain USB splitting policies to certain users).

Thanks !

Are you using the standard VMware audio-driver or replaced it with Teradici's?

What are the guest OS?

What are the audio-policy set at for quality and bandwidth?

I've tried with two drivers and same thing happens.

The Guest OS is Windows 7 x64

The policies of audio quality and bandwidth are for better quality and greater bandwidth. I've tried different values and is always the same, I've tried without GPOs and same thing happens.

You can apply GPO based on security group membership.   That should allow you to target specific users.

Finding cause of high latency?

$

I'm having an issue with high disk latency but I'm not sure how I can find out what is causing it. I work for a school district and last year everything was fine with about 800 desktops on our Nimble SAN. This year I'm seeing 40ms+ of disk latency with less than 200 people on desktops. When no one is logged in it runs fine.

Where can I start to look?

Thanks
