Re: Finding cause of high latency?

You can utilize RESXTOP if you want to view things from the host level or you can look at a solution like VCOPS.   I know VCOPS might be to expensive but you could always just install under the trial license and see if it helps pinpoint your problem.

Those are just tools from a vSphere perspective.   Nimble should also have tools to assist in pinpointing the problem.

Veeam One Monitoring can also provide you with this information, and there's also a free trial you can download that's easier to install than vCOPS in my opinion.

view client c++ error remotemks.exe

Here is a strange one.  We have Win7 physical desktops with version 2.3.3 of the Horizon View client and Win7 linked clone desktops with Agent version 5.2 and connection broker ver 5.2.

When we connect to a VM through the view client we see this error (attached):

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error

Program: .....VMware Horizon View Client\VMware-remotemks.exe

Abnormal Program Termination.

If you close the error message box the VM disconnects - if you leave the error message alone sometimes you get a VM, sometimes you don't.  I have 10 identical pools created from the same gold image - it might be that the error is only happening on specific pools but I am not sure, it may be all.

When I first deployed this gold image I got protocol errors in view admin console.  I could successfully connect via PCoIP and Blast in spite of the error (we do not allow connections via RDP).  I found to the cause to be RDP was disabled in the gold image - once RDP was enabled the protocol error went away.

A logical solution to the runtime error would be to re-install the view client and re-provision the pools.  Tried reinstalling the client without success - will try re-provisioning the pools later.

My guess is that the issue is something on my gold image.  Any experience with this error or ideas?

Thank you,

PCOIP or RDP?  Or have you tried both?

Is there a version of the 'Optimizer Tool' that is certififed for production?

Hi, just wondering if there is a copy of the Optimizer Tool that is VMware certified for production use?

I would like to use this tool for the 1st time since it shows up in a many discussions, but hesitant since VMware explicitly warns against optimizing a master image with this tool for production.

Thanks, let me know if the production version is located somewhere other than the labs site.

I am extremely careful with my master images and never experiment with them or use or follow any steps not outlined by VMware directly.

Hi,

I received word this was triggered on a sonicwall as well - I'm looking into it now but there should be no virus. We've scanned the binary several times and have no viruses detected, nor should there be one since this was built from source. I'll be engaging our internal security just to be on the safe side and have the download analyzed for any issues.

Thanks for letting us know, but this should be considered safe.

MKguy,

Agreed - as I mentioned, this was built from source and zipped on my dev machine so it should be good. I'm not sure why the Dell 4500 or Sonicwall are triggering false positives on this, but we're looking into it. The download should definitely be considered safe.

@BZatWS, thanks for reporting the prblem, it looks like an issue of view client. I would suggest you to work with your VMware contact to file a SR.

There is only one version of the VMware OS Optimizer Tool that I know of.

Its basically a bunch of settings that you could go through manually and the tool is just a way of doing it faster.

There is always a risk that it will break something in your applications, there is no way to guarantee that that will not happen.

So if you are worried about that I would advise you to test each setting separately to make sure that it does not causes any issues.

Does it make a difference if you install the Thinapp to the machine via msi instead of running it through the UNC path?

You also have the option of utilizing the bat file that comes with the Windows 7/8 optimization guide.    I've used it several times and had no issues in my environment.

VMware View Clients disconnecting - PCoIP debug log shows "sessionDisconnectTimer: Setting timer for 2147480 seconds"

I have operators that stay on my workstations 24/7/365.  Assuming there are no other problems, they get kicked off of their View sessions after about 24 days.  We are using HP Thin Clients running the ThinOS and VMware View Client.  When I check the debug log on the Windows 7 VM I see that when the connection is established, it writes the following line:

2014-09-09 08:44:30,807 DEBUG <MessageFrameWorkDispatch> [wsnm_desktop] sessionDisconnectTimer: Setting timer for 2147480 seconds

After time expires, I get the following messages in the same log and the client disconnects:

2014-09-09 08:30:08,571 DEBUG <TimerService> [wsnm_desktop] sessionDisconnectTimer: timer triggered, disconnecting session.

2014-09-09 08:30:08,571 DEBUG <TimerService> [wsnm_desktop] session::SessionDisconnectTimedOut: Disconnect message posted to desktop

Where is it getting this timer from?  The global setting on the View server is maxed out at 9,999,999 minutes.

Host is EXSi 5.0.0

VMware View Server is 5.0.0-481677

View Agent 5.0.1

OS is Windows 7 Pro running on VM version 7

Do you think we can also apply specifically the USB splitting this way - different policies for different users on the desktops in the same pool? (talking about kb.vmware.com/kb/2016748)

Thanks for your thoughts !

Most issues I have seen revolve around the services the tool will disable that some applications expect. Adobe Pro had this problem, for example. As Linjo suggested, there is no substitute for testing in your own environment.

Hi,

I´m using VMWare Workstation for a log time. (many VMs)

Now I have to install in request of one of my customers the Horizon View Client with local mode option.

The intallation of the view-client tells me, that I have to uninstall VMWare workstation to install the view client !?!

Ist this true? What is the reason for? What could be a workarount.

(For me this is a little like deinstalling word to use excel) :-(

Could someone please help me.

Many thanks,

Uli

This is a known issue that has been fixed in View 5.3.2 - the global timeout in minutes is converted to a time in milliseconds, which is then overflowing a 32-bit counter. See VMware Horizon View Release Notes

A desktop session will timeout and be disconnected after about 24 days, 20 hours and 31 minutes even though the Session timeout setting has been set to a larger value.
