Re: horizon vew with local mode & workstation

The underlying components are the same, View Local Mode is based on VMware Player/Workstation to run the virtual machines.

I do not know of a way to get the two to be installed at the same time on the same machine.

Its a little bit like IE10 and IE11, they don't like to be installed at the same time...

Hmm, But with IE10 and IE11 I´ll do the same things. How can I run my vms after installing the view client?

Cheers, Uli

Hey guys digging up an old topic but i got this recently and the error is very vague. I have a linked clone, automated dedicated pool.

* my VMs are powered on available and not logged in etc.

* automatic log off after 60 mins after disconnect

* the user is getting "All responding machines are currently in use" this happens sporadically, i dont see a pattern. is there a direction i should look in for type of error message?

my event log from view.

Linked clone saves space as comapred to full clones

I have read somewhere that linked clone in VMware View saves 90% of storage space as compared to full clone.

Could anybody help me explain how linked clones created using VMware view saves 90% of storage space compared to full clones?

Also is there any difference between a cloned VM from vcenter to full clone VDI created using VMware View?

Hosted Apps is not supported using HTML access currently, not through Horizon Workspace or Horizon View.

As the error message says, you need to use the Horizon View Client 3.0 or later

Actually installed VMware-viewagent-x86_64 and merged connection server, next hosted and enabled entitle for the RDS  desktop pool, then i am going to access the HTML access.

Hi hcxypku1985,

I am not sure what version of View you are talking about but please begin by reviewing the View documentation I have posted below for you.

VMware View 5.0 Documentation Center- (Configuring SSL Certificates for View Connection Server and Security Server)

VMware View 5.2 Documentation Library- (Update the Certificates on a View Connection Server Instance, Security Server, or View Composer)

Please let me know if this was helpful. I assume you may just need to update the certs via these instructions, then restart the View Connection service.

View & CPU Ready

All,

I have a small non-persistent pool with linked clones with win7 32bit.  my user are task workers, outlook, excel, work, light internet, like really light, no video / audio either.  i have a dell d620 with the following specs running ONLY vdi vm's, nothing else, dns, ad, exchange, etc, etc are all on other host servers, specs are 192gb ram, 2 procs, 8 cores (16), hyperthreaded to 32 logical procs.  there are 63 vdi vm's on the server, about 45 in use at any given time, about 7 are always in a ready state to accept new connections or handle logoffs / reboot.  whoops, vm's all have 1vcpu and 3gb ram.   cpu ready runs around 2.5% all day and i can't get it any lower, base image is optimized with view optimization tool, lsi sas, no floppy, all best practices in the deployment guide are being followed.

my question is this, at 2.5% cpu ready things seem sluggish to the user at times, would moving the pool to 2vcpu improve this?  i am always very cautious with adding vcpu as it could make things worse with cpu ready, vmware always says start with 1 and go from there, but im wondering if the density ratio of so many vm's with 1vcpu could be working against me.  the view deployment guide say 1, but then quickly moves to 2.

i'm curious to know what config you all are running with the ratio of vcpu to pcpu and your task worked CPU ready.  deployment guide says 6:1 should be fine, but i'm just a hair over 1:1 and my users complain about slowness, SAN iops and what not are fine as well, barely any iscsi traffic to speak of as well, network isn't the issue either, it's LAN stuff.

Any help would be awesome to hear about what my peers are doing, thanks all!

Hi guys

Im focused on PCoIP only, as I'm gonna buy PCoIP Zero Clients.

All visual effects are already turned off.

Still cant figure out what im missing. Windows 7 Desktops work perfect on the same Host.

I even tried expanding graphics vRam to 512 , Giving 8 cores to the desktop too , still when i hit start botton , i can see the frames...

Thanks in advance

Hi Nick.

About the ratio vcpu to pcpu, since you have 16 cores that would be 4.3:1 (70/16). Hyperthreading is not real cores so they do not count.

But that is still fine.

I would have a look at powersettings on your host, make sure its not set to balanced or something similar. It should be set to "high" or "Performance".

Also in the ESX settings it should be set to "high"

The next thing would be to look at storage, this is the most common reason for sluggish user experience.

As the error message says, you need to use the Horizon View Client 3.0 or later.

You can not use HTML access with Hosted Apps currently.

Re: Linked clone saves space as comapred to full clones

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

My query is how linked clone conserves space as compared to full clone.  I think it should be somewhere related to OS delta disk created in linked clone.

For ex:
Parent image has disk of 40 GB.

If I create a full clone it will be 100% copy so it will too have 40 GB disk.

If Linked clone deployed from parent image it will have 4 disk: 1) Opearting system delta disk of 40 GB, 2) internal disk of 20 MB. 3) disposal disk say of 2 GB(which is optional) and 4) persistent disk of say 2 GB.

Then where is the storage space less?

How linked clone is saving 90% of space compared to a full clone.

The delta-disk is not 40GB, it starts with a few hundred MB:s and will increase when used to a maximum of 40GB.

It might look like its 40GB when looked at in the vSphere Client but if you look at the actual file you see that its much smaller.

Hi,

Thanks Linjo

I was excepting this answer.

Then if such is the case does for every read operation in linked clone on delta disk goes to replica in the pool and does it uses copy on write mechanism?

May be then it is the reason to keep replica VM on SSD storage?

No, every read operation goes first to the linked-clone, if the block is not there then it will go to the replica.

Not sure what "copy on write" have to do with that but every write operation goes to the linked clone.

The use of SSD or not depends on your design, there is also View Storage Accelerator that can take most of the read operations.

Recomposing a disabled pool

Just working through a View 6 upgrade and all has gone well. When we've come to recompose the desktop pools the actions are not starting.

All pools are disabled to stop users logging in, rather than in maintenance mode and it appears the disablement is stopping the recompose from starting. I suppose this makes sense but I wondered if anyone else had this issue?

The reason I ask is because I would expect a disabled pool to disallow user access but to allow administrator tasks.

For info provisioning is enabled and View Composer is running on the vCenter instance. The previous View version is View 5.0.

Any thoughts appreciated. As above I understand why this is just a bit surprised.
